To target the multidisciplinary, broad scale nature of empirical educational research in the Federal Republic of Germany, a networked research data infrastructure is required which brings together disparate services from different research data providers, delivering services to researchers in a usable, needs-oriented way. The Verbund Forschungsdaten Bildung (Educational Research Data Alliance, VFDB) therefore aims to cooperate with relevant actors from science, politics and research funding institutes to set up a powerful infrastructure for empirical educational research. This service is meant to adequately capture specific needs of the scientific communities and support empirical educational research in carrying out excellent research.

Numerous studies on gender relations and gender equality policy in academia regularly produce research data that could be useful for a secondary analysis and for other research topics. At present, only a small amount of research data that was explicitly collected on gender relations in academia is archived. Long-term surveys such as graduate studies or social surveys on students are also available to be used in gender-specific studies. The Polar Rock Repository (PRR) at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center (BPCRC) at Ohio State University is an NSF-OPP funded facility that provides access to rock, terrestrial drill core, glacial deposits and marine dredge samples from Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. The polar rock collection and database includes field notes, photos, maps, cores, powder and mineral residues, thin sections, and residues.
