Description
Historisch Centrum Limburg (HCL; in English: Historical Center Limburg) is a merger of the state repository in the capital of the province Limburg, the municipal repository of Maastricht and the municipal repository of Heerlen. The municipalities of Heerlen and Maastricht, together with the national government, are the administrative partners in the Joint Regulation 'Gemeenschappelijke regeling Historisch Centrum Limburg 2020'. By this joint regulation, HCL is a public body and therefore a public-law organization. HCL also has Service Agreements with: province of Limburg, water authority of Limburg, municipality of Beek, municipality of Beekdaelen, municipality of Brunssum, municipality of Eijsden-Margraten, municipality of Gulpen-Wittem, municipality of Landgraaf, municipality of Meerssen, municipality of Simpelveld, municipality of Vaals, municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul, municipality of Voerendaal, and the joint regulations GGD Zuid-Limburg, Het Gegevenshuis, ISD Bol, Kompas, Gemeentelijk collectief voor werk, inkomen & zorg, Kredietbank Limburg, Omgevingsdienst Zuid-Limburg, Rd4, Stadsregio Parkstad, Veiligheidsregio Zuid-Limburg, het Werkgeversservicepunt Parkstad, het Werkvoorzieningschap Oostelijk Zuid Limburg, and Zorg- en Veiligheidshuis. HCL collects, manages, and provides access to archives and collections of the aforementioned government institutions and private individuals and institutions in Limburg: those of religious communities, associations, foundations, companies, castles, families, and individuals. In principle, these archives are open to the public. In some cases, restrictions have been imposed to protect the privacy of living individuals. In addition to archives, HCL has extensive collections of manuscripts, almanacs, photographs, (land) maps, drawings, posters, prayer cards, and letterheads.
