The Health Data Lab (HDL) at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) is designed to enhance medical research and improve healthcare for citizens by generating insights that expedite the development of medical treatments. The HDL evolved from a previous data processing unit at the former German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI), which analyzed claims data for research since 2013. Following DIMDI's dissolution in 2019 and the enactment of the Digital Healthcare Act, the HDL was established to take over the unit's responsibilities. It operates independently under the legal frameworks of the Data Transparency Regulation (DaTraV) and the Health Data Use Act (GDNG).
