Description
The European Social Survey (ESS) is an academically driven cross-national survey that has been conducted across Europe since its establishment in 2001. Every two years, interviews are conducted with newly selected, cross-sectional samples.
Questions in every round measure attitudes towards climate; crime and justice; democracy and government; immigration; health and wellbeing; institutional and social trust; media and internet use; European, national and ethnic identity; perceived discrimination; political affiliation, interest and participation; religion; social exclusion; and values.
Information is also collected for respondents’ ancestry; education; employment; financial circumstances; household composition; and other socio-demographics including sex, age and information about their partners and parents.
In each round, two topics are covered in more depth following an open competition. Round 11 (2023/24) included two 'rotating' modules: ‘Gender in contemporary Europe: Rethinking equality and the backlash’ and ‘Social inequalities in health and their determinants’.

Remarks
National funding agencies in all participating countries are required to contribute to the central coordination costs, led by the ESS Core Scientific Team (CST). These are composed of a basic membership fee and an additional amount, calculated according to the GDP of each country. In addition, each country covers the cost of fieldwork and national coordination.
Prior to the award of ERIC status, the ESS was funded on a round-by-round basis. The central coordination and design was funded through the European Commission, the European Science Foundation (ESF) and national funding councils.
The ESS has also been a beneficiary of several projects funded by the European Commission.
