The figshare service for The Open University was launched in 2016 and allows researchers to store, share and publish research data. It helps the research data to be accessible by storing metadata alongside datasets. Additionally, every uploaded item receives a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the data to be citable and sustainable. If there are any ethical or copyright concerns about publishing a certain dataset, it is possible to publish the metadata associated with the dataset to help discoverability while sharing the data itself via a private channel through manual approval.

Research data management is a general term covering how you organize, structure, store, and care for the information used or generated during a research project. The University of Oxford policy mandates the preservation of research data and records for a minimum of 3 years after publication. A place to securely hold digital research materials (data) of any sort along with documentation that helps explain what they are and how to use them (metadata). The application of consistent archiving policies, preservation techniques and discovery tools, further increases the long term availability and usefulness of the data. The Whitehall II study was established to explore the relationship between socio-economic status, stress and cardiovascular disease. A cohort of 10,308 participants aged 35-55, of whom 3,413 were women and 6,895 men, was recruited from the British Civil Service in 1985. Since this first wave of data collection, self-completion questionnaires and clinical data have been collected from the cohort every two to five years with a high level of participation. Data collection is intended to continue until 2030.
